| 142's aplenty in the workshop |
John arrived on Wednesday with his ailing late model 142 (fuel injection), it is serious USA spec which comprises...
- Bosch D-Jetronic electronic fuel injection
- BW35 automatic gearbox
- Power steering
- Air conditioning
The car is exhibiting poor starting, and intermittently very poor power, so we shall be going through the Bosch D-Jet with a fine tooth comb to identify the failure - already we have set the valve clearances (not surprisingly due to the amount of plumbing, this has been overlooked by the previous servicing mechanic) which were very tight. Also #2 & #4 spark plugs were very oily, which could imply injector problems.
Rob's 142 rally car Whilst awaiting various sexy bits (like cylinder head studs to arrive from America, for the B21 & B20 motors we are currently building, plus the three B18 motors waiting to be built) Emma told me to sort out my 142.
- Excrutiatingly, I can confess that the last time this ran on the public road was December 2006: the Preston Rally
- After the front end bodywork (the front longitudinals had bent upwards about 20mm) I had decided to re-wire it (2007)
- All wiring & relays to come inside the passenger compartment, hence the beautifully empty engine bay
- This week I have done just that, all I have left to do now (before the MoT) is...
- Rig the 7 relays: Fuel Pump 1&2, RevLamp, AuxLts, Overdrive, RadFan, Horn
- Fit the twin fuel pumps in the boot
- Rig the FilterKing fuel regulator in the engine bay
- Fit the radiator (complete with 92°/87° switch)
- Fit the carb linkages
- Umm, that could be it....
In fact I'm really excited about getting the 142 back again, it really is the most superb car and a delight to be in. Even Sophie (youngest daughter, whose idea of a nice car is a good paintjob, walnut dash, and at least 3 syllables ending in "i" - she has a point I suppose) says that she's looking forward to going out in it again. Oh, and Amy (who is allowed to navigate for me later this year) has refused to navigate at all if I don't get the 142 back on the road.
