9th April 2009
121, 142, 244, P1800S & 164 through the workshop...
Busy old month really, but I have to say that I have been lazy not to have updated my website news - apologies!
  • 121: Phil's Amazon arrived after a few years idleness, to be fully serviced, then full rollcage and competition seats & harnesses for Historic Road Rallying. On his departure we discovered that despite having drained the fuel and refilled with fresh, there was still a lot of sludge in the tank, so we did an "emergency" fuel tank change, in a time that Jenson Button would be pleased with!
  • 142: my stage car got its Competition Car Log Book on Sunday, while I was marshalling at the Sculthorpe Stages - so we now have a stage rally car ready to run (nearly), yippee!
    • I have to replace the side glass with PolyCarbonate, on order from the hugely knowledgeable and helpful Stuart of Airedale Race Components - besides the safety requirement to do so, that's 25kg of weight saved with the door interior trim panel.
    • I've deleted the bumpers, that's another 12kg - not much is it? That's the problem with Volvo, they spec'd alloy bumpers to begin with!
    • I am deleting one (of the two) silencers, since our noise level was 91dB versus 100dB permitted for Stage Rally (98dB for Road Rally): that should be 5kg at least?
    • Last Friday it weighed in at 1140kg
      • Homologation weight in 1972 was 1073kg
      • Permitted MSA weight for pre-82 is 810kg
      • I hope to hit 980kg, in line with a very powerful local BDA Escort: Ian Rix's - I just won't hit his power output sadly.
  • David took delivery of his 244 with B21 and twin 40DCOE Webers: we're pleased with this engine build, very much suited to his tall axle ratio by having far better torque than his original B21A and appears to rev very cleanly also.
  • P1800S: the car we bought off John following his engine fire is now MoT'd
    • New B18 engine
    • New suspension
    • Steering sorted out
    • Rear brakes sorted out
    • Servo sorted out
    • And a heap of other issues
    • ...just awaiting the DVLA to send us the UK registration so we can drive her!
  • 164: Jaap bought this car from a customer following its catastrophic engine failure. I took the cylinder head off today to ascertain the extent of the damage:
    • We already new that #5 and/or #6 conrods had already punched there way into the bottom of the sump
    • As I took off the rocker gear, I couldn't find #9 and #12 pushrods, oooh!
    • Cylinder head off revealed no contact damage with the valves or pistons
    • The camshaft appears to have broken aft of #8 camlobe
    • #9 & #12 followers and pushrods appear to have been swallowed by the sump
    • Next action? I suspect Jaap may well ask us to pull out the motor and sort it...
Happy Easter!
