| Sorting a very (very) sad B30, from a 164 |
Jaap's 164 has resided here for about a year now, following a catastrophic engine failure.
- It appears that one of the #6 conrod nuts may have unwound itself
- The conrod big end cap then broke up
- You can see the devastation this then caused!
- #6 conrod then collided with the camshaft & oil pump
- #6 piston broke up
- Camshaft shattered into no less than 4 separate pieces, the aft segment then projected into the starter ring
- The oil pump sheared off entirely, breaking the dizzie/pump drive in two
- The conrod then half exited out of the side of the block, leaving a 5x4cm hole just abaft the dizzie
- It looks like the engine has never been worked on before, and the camshaft had many badly worn lobes, however to lose a big end nut from a B30 is pretty extraordinary...
- So, after two days solid work we have a replacement (used) engine in situ, with the BW35 gearbox
- Today our work placement student, Connor, should hopefully be in a position to start the old dear!
- Addendum
- Fired up beautifully yesterday, and the leaking (new'ish) water pump sealed immediately the engine was warm
- It has now gone up to Spurlings for its MoT...
As for Emma's PV544: Myles now has the RH door & sill repaired, and the new roof sprayed up.
Chris/Mavis' delightful 122S left yesterday with its rebuilt engine: Mavis called last night to report that it was noticeably peppier following its rebore and fresh camshaft (the old had very worn #5 lobe), and that fuel consumption appears to have improved also.
