| Go-slow at the workshop - nice Spicer axle rebuild - nasty LPG problem |
On my way to a hospital appointment (neurology - checking into a problem I've had since inverting in a rally car, I wasn't the driver!), I failed to step over an armco barrier and fractured my left forearm, a radial head fracture to be precise. So the workshop has not been its usual rapid turnaround for the past 10 days, but the break is now pretty much sorted, and the associated sprains are getting better now.
- But what has been happening here then?
- We've built a very nice Spicer axle, destined for a P1800: 4.88 crown wheel & pinion; limited slip diff; uprated halfshafts.
- Fired up Richard's Peking2Paris Amazon: fresh 2litre twin SU motor sounds lovely.
- Simon's 760 failed its MoT on balljoint, bush & a little welding. It's now awaiting funds.
- Currently resolving a 123GT with overheating & misfire problems. The rad is pretty much blocked, thick brown sludge in the expansion bottle. A new SuperX core in the radiator, and a thorough chemical flush should see us most of the way to a solution
- Emma's 850 LPG has been a saga: we've had the car for 6 weeks since conversion and not yet used a tank of gas, here's why...
- About 40 miles after collection from the LPG specialists, the car ran appallingly, then the delivery hose to the injectors blew off. A quick test revealed well in excess of 2bars pressure (it should be around 1.3 bar)
- We fitted the replacement Vaporiser a week later, 25 miles later the same thing happened.
- Two weeks later a (supposedly) modified Vaporiser arrived, although it had the same 11/11 date stamp as the other two, it had a hand written "R" beside it - guess what: instantly high pressure, we couldn't even drive it.
- Solution: we've given up with the specialist and fitted the Bigas vaporiser that we used when I created the 145 fuel injected LPG conversion: bingo, works first time.
- Irritating, since I suspect that the 3rd unit was a "home" modified one, not a factory unit, otherwise it would never have arrived faulty since the factory set the pressure before despatch.
