| Flying Fortress and all sorts today! |
As three customers found out, Emma & I were on the mobile phone from 0930-1045 today. We were standing on the old runway of the 95th Bomb Group in Horham (Suffolk), which is 8 miles from work.
- First of all two of the local USAAF warbirds came over, forgive me for being vague but I don't know what they were:
- Monowing light aircraft, wing above the fuselage, in D-Day colours
- Biplane, umm that's about all I can tell you!
- Then the reason for us being there
- B17 Flying Fortress "Liberty Belle", and wow it was worth the wait as I could clearly count 3 crew in the cockpit as they did 3 passes of the runway, departing with a waggle.
- She's flown over to Europe for a tour; I think her recent history goes something like... Dad was the tailgunner (stationed at Horham perhaps), son then bought the Liberty Belle and restored her to her current condition.
- Back at work an hour ago, a P51 Mustang flew over, I reckon that's our local chap who's based above Harleston at another old Bomb Group airfield.
- Then just now the two USAAF's flew over us, the mono and bi-plane.
The slow thunder of the B17 as she beat up the runway was as thrilling as listening to a Spitfire.
