| Welsh Endurance Rally, last weekend |
Got back from the Welsh Endurance at 2030 last night (Sunday).
Not a Volvo to be seen, and I don't see myself campaigning a 343 simply because of parts problems. Actually we did spot a 220 estate on the M25 (or was it the M4 still?): very rustic, big old wide steel wheels, and a pair of dudes inside (surfers perhaps?).
However Richard Atherton and I took 14th place, and 2nd in class, after a very wet (thanks to all the marshals who braved the elements) event indeed. Owen Turner took 1st, giving him the championship: well deserved for a good team, and a well prep'd car.
The statistics as I recall them: 59 started the rally, 32 of whom finished. We were up at 0630 Saturday, got to bed at 0330 on Sunday, up again at 0800, rally finished by 1230.
Now I have to confess that I felt pretty queazy throughout the weekend, but I'm pleased to say that today (Monday) I'm still under the weather, so I'm pretty certain that I have not gained an allergy to motorsport, and that I simply shouldn't have eaten that (disgusting) pastie on Saturday midday!
My thanks to Richard, and his well prepared Rover 200: a delightful chauffeur to share the car with. Our only problem (besides a slightly rusty navigator) was the wiper linkage parting company with the motor, which cost us around 12' of penalty time (so I'm pretty pleased that we pulled our way back to 14th). ...if that sounds like a minor problem, take a look at the weather patterns in the Welsh valleys for Saturday, and you'll appreciate that we could have retired for that little devil!
